Mike Leach started playing soccer at 5-years old. He went on to play 4 years of Varsity soccer at St. Michaels High School (St Michaels ,MD) where his father, Denver Leach, was head coach from 1970 to 1988. Denver Leach took St. Michaels High School to 7 State Finals, winning 4 State Championships.
Mike Leach made First Team All Bayside Conference defender as a junior in high school. His senior year he was moved to forward and was named Bayside Conference Player of the Year, scoring a school record 27 goals and 11 assists while taking the team to the State Finals. Leach went on to play Division III soccer at Methodist College in Fayetteville, NC (now called Methodist University) starting every game as a freshman.
After college, Leach started coaching Rec soccer and in 2006, formed FC Talbot Boys 10U Travel Soccer Team whom he coached for 5 years . Also in 2006 he started FC Talbot Girls 10UTravel Soccer. Once Bayshore SC was founded, Leach moved his team where he continued to coach them for a total of 9 years, ending when they were U19. Eleven girls from that team went on to play college soccer.
During that stretch, Leach also served as Head Coach of the Easton High School Girls' Varsity team for 8 years before taking over as Head Coach of the Kent Island High School Girls' Varsity team in 2017. In November 2016, Leach formed Bayshore SC Velocity Black, a girls team pulling from nine different high schools in Maryland and Delaware.
